Microtext and QR codes in gravure packaging

تاریخ نشر:

Fine text and QR codes require different approval checks. Microtext is judged for reproduction at its intended size. A QR code also has to carry the right data and remain readable in its final position on the pack. Treat both as production requirements during artwork review.

Separate fixed artwork from variable data

A conventional engraved cylinder repeats its engraved image. It can reproduce a fixed code within that repeat, but it does not generate a new serial number for every pack. Unique per-pack codes need a variable-data printing or marking stage and a defined data workflow.

For example, Domino describes digital variable-data printing for sequential numbers, barcodes and QR codes on labels and packaging. This is a separate production capability to confirm with the converter or filling-line operator. See Domino's variable-data printing guidance.

Approve microtext on a printed sample

Provide the smallest text, line work and reversed-out details at their final size. Agree what must remain legible, how it will be examined and which sample represents the intended film and ink combination. Avoid promising one universal minimum character size across different artworks and printing conditions.

HUAYN's cylinder workflow uses HELL electronic engraving. A job review should connect the approved artwork to the engraving and press requirements. A screen enlargement can help find artwork errors, but the approval decision for fine reproduction needs a relevant printed sample.

Specify the code and its position

Confirm the code type, data content and scanning application before sizing it. Keep the required quiet zone clear of graphics and place the code away from folds, seals or other features that interfere with scanning. GS1 explains that printed barcode quality can be assessed using defined verification methods, including ISO/IEC 15415 for two-dimensional symbols. See GS1's barcode production guidance.

Agree the verification record

Ask who will verify the code, which equipment and settings will be used, and when samples will be checked. For serialized work, also define the data owner, handling of duplicate or unreadable codes, and the records to be handed over. A successful phone scan does not provide all of that evidence.

Send the artwork, code requirements, material and finished pack format with the inquiry. See our gravure cylinder service for the inputs needed before engraving, and prepress service for file preparation.
